What is an Oratory all about?

Don Bosco was a priestly man of vision; with a Shepherd’s heart for needy youth. He believed in the dream at the age of nine in which God showed him his mission and vocation to serve the young.

As a young priest in 1846, Don Bosco began an ‘Oratory’ at Valdocco, Turin, for youth from the streets who had no home to stay, no dream to follow, no skills to sustain a livelihood and no faith to hold on to. The Oratory was a ‘home’ that welcomed, a ‘school’ that educated, a ‘church’ that evangelized and a ‘playground’ where friends could meet.

Don Bosco Oratory reflects this dream of Don Bosco. The Salesians of Don Bosco at Matunga believe that the Oratory would be the best platform to enhance the growth and formation of the young. The slums of Mumbai are seed-beds for talented potential stars. With little or no opportunities, these young people have shown the will and resilience to rise above every obstacle and reach for the stars.

The entire community at Don Bosco Provincial House considers the Oratory as a privileged setting for young people to discover their place in society with dignity and meaning. Many facilities like the turf grounds and sporting equipments, nutritions, music instruments, computers, dance, spoken English, library, value education sessions, leadership skills and team building exercises are provided to the young people every day.
